— The submission deadline for The Brilliant Failure Award – Health 2013 is closed–

Failures are worth gold!

“You can learn from mistakes!”Who was not inculcated as a child? Yet we often do not dare to be open if we do not achieve our goals. The Institute for Brilliant Failures, ZonMw and the Dialogues House of ABN-AMRO, want to change that. Because in a professional environment, it is often the failures that lead to progress. In 2013 we present the Brilliant Failure Award Health. An award for the best failure in healthcare. Is your failure worth gold?

The challenge

Healthcare is facing drastic changes. More customization, an emphasis on quality of life, targeted funding and a shift to "self-management" of the patient. Innovation will be accompanied by trial and error. Because new initiatives do not always go as planned. And that is just as well. After all, innovation is mainly the result of learning from what does not work. Learning ability is a sign of strength. But it takes guts. And an open dialogue.

De Brilliant Failure Award

The Institute for Brilliant Failures (IvBM) wants to put the spotlight on failed projects that can be learned from. That's why, together with ZonMw and Dialogues, an award created for the best teaching moment in healthcare: The Brilliant Failure Award – Health 2013. The prize encourages scientists and healthcare professionals to share their failures. After all, you don't only learn from your own solid- or missed projects, but also from someone else's! Healthcare is a broad sector. In which many subjects play. This first time we do not choose a theme or accent that the entries must meet. Submission is open to any failed project that can be learned from regardless of subject. When submitting, the following questions need to be answered:
• What was the intention?
• What approach has been chosen to achieve that goal?
• What was the result? And how did that differ from what they hoped to achieve?
• What lesson did the failure bring? And what can others learn from it?

Submit?

On 8 april 2013 ZonMw director Henk Smid, together with professor of neurology Bas Bloem, gave a presentation on the importance of failures in healthcare during the TedX Future of Health Congress in Nijmegen. See here the link to their contribution, and to a movie about an example case.
