NEWSLETTER #1 ’23

Being open to the unknown and learning from the unexpected

The Institute for Brilliant Failures (IvBM) is committed to facilitating and making learning experiences accessible. We embrace failure as an important learning moment. After all, what would the world be without guts, without accidental discoveries and without the opportunity to learn from what went wrong? Through this newsletter we would like to keep you informed of our activities and we would like to invite you to our events.

Award care 2023 – Do you know or are you someone with a brilliant failure in healthcare?

in june 2023 we are organizing the next edition of the Brilliant Failures Award Care. At the moment we are still looking for good cases. Do you know or are you someone who has had a brilliant failure in healthcare or are you working on a project where failure is imminent? Sign up below or send an email to redactie@briljantemislukkekingen.nl

When innovating in healthcare (almost-)failures lead to progress. A Brilliant Failure is a well-prepared attempt to achieve something with a different outcome than planned. Failures are brilliant when they are learned from and the experiences are shared with others. We find the opportunities to learn when things go wrong or (upon success) could have gone wrong, but where that didn't happen. You can because you were lucky, but also because you consciously made the right decision, based on thinking, knowledge use, to collaborate, etc.

Brilliant Failures Award AI Coalition Public Services

On 12 In April, the Brilliant AI Failures Award will be presented for the second time during the NL AI Congress. We see an AI failure as an important learning opportunity. During the NL AI Congress we will present, among other things:. a wonderful case about too much tourism in the Amsterdam forest and we go into the learnings. How do you avoid making the same mistakes and what makes these failures brilliant?

We are still looking for other good examples in the public domain, health and care or education. Submit your case for a chance to win the award.

The right to fail brilliantly

Support our ideas by signing the Universal Declaration of the Right to Fail Brilliant. By doing so, you recognize that this is the foundation of psychological safety and personal and organizational evolution, and thus for being able to forgive, relativize and learn from failed attempts at both the individual and organizational level. In addition, you acknowledge that each individual and body, with this statement permanently in mind, will strive to promote appreciation of these rights and freedoms, and by progressive measures to have these rights widely and effectively recognized and applied.

Increase your failure intelligence

You may have once attended a lecture and or introductory workshop of the Institute for Brilliant Failures. With that you are already mentally part of the growing community of professionals that embraces the Brilliant Failures philosophy! Together we can make a case for facilitating and making learning experiences accessible. We embrace failure as an important learning moment. After all, what would the world be without guts, without accidental discoveries and without the opportunity to learn from what went wrong?

During the inspiration lecture and/or you were also able to taste our Brilliant Failures failure patterns. Whenever something goes differently than planned or hoped, do you see this is caused by one of the 16 patterns or universal lessons. What learning experiences came up for you when you came face to face with The empty chair (not all relevant parties involved), De canyon (we really have to be careful that important peripheral issues slow down innovation) of The wrong wallet (dealing with conflicting interests)?

By recognizing our failure patterns, you can think in advance about possible reasons why things could go wrong ("Fail Forward"). During projects or activities you can use the patterns to see more quickly what is going on and make adjustments. Afterwards, the failure patterns help to understand the essence and (together with others) to learn. This can be done individually, team and organizational level. And that is very worthwhile. Also for your organization. Recent research shows that organizations in which employees periodically make time for 15 minutes of reflection to 20% be more effective!

Did you know that in addition to inspirational lectures, we also offer in-depth workshops, offer training and learning pathways to concretely get started with increasing the learning and innovative capacity of your people? A selection from our offer (suitable for all professionals in your organization).

  • In-depth workshop (1 daypart) – Brilliant Failures Failure patterns in practice,
  • Internal Brilliant Failures Award – your best learning moments on our soap box (optionally with its own version of the Magazine for Brilliant Failures)
  • Customized learning path, including implementation of our online learning environment with valuable case studies.

For more information, please contact us. We are happy to discuss the possibilities.
