The intention

Organize a management day where we don't talk about leadership, but put the beautiful words about this into practice.

The approach

In the months leading up to the management day, a large number of directors were interviewed about what they understand by leadership and what behavior they would like to see from middle managers.. The results of these discussions were presented to a large group of middle managers. The response to this was; and, Please, We would also like to show this behavior and give us the space to actually do it. For the management day that would follow on the theme, it was decided that we would put our words into action and that middle managers would take their own role. The setup of the day was made with a number of people from this group who would also occupy a key position on that day. In addition to the general theme Leadership, the day was about the personnel consequences that an initiated renewal process would have, a shrinkage of 25%. During the day, the focus would be on yourself and thinking about what this message means for your team, how to bring the message to your team and who and what you need.

The result

Shortly before this day, the board of directors opted for a different communication route about the personnel consequences and the message was poured out about the organization, via intranet and mass meetings without the involvement of middle managers. During the management day, the message was traditionally proclaimed from the pulpit again.

The lessons

The energy released by the group of middle managers in making the plans for the management day and their role in it was enormous. People wanted to take responsibility and also run the risks involved.
