Province of South Holland wins Brilliant Failure Award AI in the Public Sector 2024
On Wednesday 24 april 2024 was awarded the Award for the Most Brilliant Failure in the field of AI in the public sector for the third time during the Dutch AI Congress. This election is an initiative of the Dutch AI Coalition in collaboration with the Institute for Brilliant Failures.
Creating awareness for the importance of learning and experimenting with AI is the reason to pay attention to AI projects in a positive way. The possibilities with AI are enormous, but it does not happen automatically and it is important to learn from all experiences, so that we can use socially relevant applications of AI efficiently, effective and responsible manner. After an explanation by Paul Iske, jury chairman, and also Chief Failure Officer of the Institute of Brilliant Failures, the prize was presented by Martijn Bekking, coordinator of the Public Services working group at the Dutch AI Coalition.
The prize for most brilliant failure was won by the Province of South Holland in combination with Geronimo.AI, a young company that deals with geodata in combination with AI. The project wanted to investigate whether it is possible to use existing data related to roads to predict the optimal maintenance time, which is better than the current 'expert judgment' method., or from asphalt expertise. This question also had an exploratory nature: what is already possible in the field of data-driven working and prediction models, and is useful for road maintenance? The desired results did not materialize, especially by (poor data quality. The dataset was too small and inconsistent to make a reliable prediction on a term that is 'actionable' for the province. Unfortunately, nothing could be done with it other than taking the lessons to heart and sharing them in the network, whatever has been done. The developed algorithm has been shared with the Algorithm Register for the government. An important lesson is to accept that AI does not yet possess all human domain knowledge, so that it has become clear again that AI should stand for 'Supplementary Intelligence'. A more detailed description of this case can be found here here.
The second prize was won by the Arnhem Nijmegen University of Applied Sciences, where an attempt was made to use ChatGPT to detect plagiarism with ChatGPT without success. The description of this case is stated here in BriMis.

Awards in 2025
The Dutch AI Coalition (www.nlaic.com) and the Institute for Brilliant Failures (This competition is organized by the Institute of Brilliant Failures) continue to emphasize the importance of experimenting with AI and promote this (brilliant) failure in the responsible development and application of AI is inevitable. We therefore invite all parties in the public sector to compete for the Brilliant Failures Award for 2025.
