The intention
A series (radio-) making reports where immigrant Rotterdammers went back to their roots. In practice this is it (original) country of origin.
The approach
Most colleagues submitted an itinerary. I just wanted to stay in Rotterdam because my experience was that many immigrants are born and bred in Rotterdam. Their origin is therefore Rotterdam.
The result
My idea was ridiculed under the guise that I hadn't understood the intent. In 2000 maybe my idea came too early. Na 2002 a series of urban debates were held in Rotterdam, right on this topic.
The lessons
My teaching moment is that you have to articulate innovation very well, preferably with facts, figures and views of respected experts as researchers, trend watchers, foreign sources. And persevere, repetition is the power of the message!
