The intention

The Vista Project in Tibet wanted a technical school in the Sershul region in the far northwest of Sichuan Province, Expanding China with water supply and sewage, so that students no longer had to relieve themselves in the open air and the environment would become cleaner.

The approach

The necessary money was quickly raised by the Rigdzin Foundation with the help of Wilde Ganzen and NCDO and construction could start in May of 2008. One of the board members was on 8 May arrived in Chengdu, China to hand over the money to the partner organization there.

The result

We had to wait a year with construction, because a day before the money would be handed over, a major earthquake occurred in Sichuan (12 May 2008) In addition, there were riots in the Tibetan areas so that no one was allowed to travel there.

The lessons

Lying in a homemade tent in the middle of the park of Chengdu in China, I thought I was very lucky because I wasn't a direct victim of the earthquake. But I also saw that disaster can just happen to you. A little later I was able to return to the safe Netherlands, while I had to leave my friends. very sour.

What I want to tell others is that you should always ask yourself whether disasters can happen, assorted from major currencies- fluctuations to in my case an earthquake and if that can happen, what you think you can do with regard to your project. Can you postpone it, can you raise more funds for it, do you have a plan that can still be carried out in a slimmed-down form or in an alternative way?

Further:
A year later we were still able to realize the expansion, the riots were over but not the suffering of the victims. We realized that once again when in April 2010 in Yushu, Tibet another earthquake occurred, at less than 100 km away from Sershulu, the area where we work. With a hard shock we realized: escaped the dance again!
