The intention

Columbus' original intention: find a fast trade route to the Far East.

The approach

The Italian explorer left nothing to chance: he arranged – finally in Spain – sponsoring his mission and undertook the daring journey with an experienced crew and well-equipped ships.

The result

Columbus' mission ended in failure. Its original purpose: Columbus failed to make the Asian market more accessible: instead of the intended India, he reached an unknown continent.

The lessons

The "discovery" of America by Columbus was not only a learning experience for the explorer himself, but inspired countless others.

Further:
Columbus was not the only explorer of his time to achieve a brilliant failure. Not only North America but also South America was accidentally discovered by Spaniard Vicente Pinzon. He wanted to explore the Caribbean further but came across Brazil.
