The intention

a motorist, also inventor, from California wanted to develop a successful mechanism in the 1950s that would allow large American cars to enter without damage- and out of parking.

The approach

In 1952 he developed an extendable 5th wheel that was mounted transversely between the two rear wheels. Allowed cars to turn sideways with the rear.

The result

The fifth wheel was not a success; probably it is the first time you see this invention. No car manufacturer supplies this accessory.

The lessons

The inventor of the fifth wheel did not stop at an 'idea', but also performed it so that he (and his wife) could turn and park more easily. Because the fifth wheel was not a great success, had to look for other parking solutions; this is how the modern parking sensors were eventually created.
