Facebook had the plan to send drones into the air in Africa that could provide the internet there. Through the solar cells, that catch sunlight from above the cloud cover, the drones would have to land less often. This way Facebook could get more users in Africa. The implementation of this plan turned out to be very complex and Facebook had thought too much about it. After a crash on a test flight in 2016 stopped the project called Aquila. Facebook will now collaborate with parties such as Airbus, because they had more experience with these kinds of projects. Google is also working on providing thinly populated areas with internet, they do this through hot air balloons. These are easier to develop, but harder to send.
